More About
Dr. Rob Bowman

Dr. Bowman was all of seven when he first heard the magic sound of The Beatles performing Twist and Shout. His life instantly went from gray to technicolor as music became a life-affirming, all-consuming passion. By the age of 15, he was writing for national music magazines, initially interviewing his blues heroes such as BB King, Buddy Guy and John Lee Hooker. By the time he was 16, he was interviewing and writing about rock stars, such as Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck and Santana. His first cover story was on Pink Floyd whom he interviewed during the Dark Side of the Moon tour in the late winter 1973.

Since those early days, Dr. Bowman has spent over half a century writing professionally about rhythm and blues, rock, country, jazz, and gospel. Nominated for six Grammy Awards, he won in 1996 in the Best Album Notes category for a 47,000-word monograph he penned to accompany a 10-CD box set that he also co-produced, The Complete Stax/Volt Soul Singles Volume 3: 1972-1975 (Fantasy Records). In total, he has produced, compiled and/or written liner notes for over 250 compact disc sets.

His first book, Soulsville U.S.A.: The Story of Stax Records (Schirmer Books), told the larger-than-life story of the label that defined southern soul music and featured such illustrious stars as Otis Redding, the Staple Singers, Sam & Dave and Isaac Hayes. Thirty years after it was first published, Soulsville U.S.A. remains a definitive text, and became the basis for a four-hour HBO documentary, similarly titled Stax Records: Soulsville U.S.A. The book won the 1998 ASCAP-Deems Taylor and ARSC Awards for Excellence in Music Research. In 2013, Soulsville U.S.A: The Story of Stax Records was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. The 2024 HBO documentary, based on his book and featuring him extensively, won a prestigious Peabody Award.

Over time, Dr. Bowman became known as an exceptional interviewer and is regularly flown to cities in North America, Europe and Australia to conduct high-profile music interviews. In 2002 and 2003, The Rolling Stones took him on the road to conduct a series of multi-hour interviews for their autobiography, According to the Rolling Stones (2003).

His interviews with The Rolling Stones were also used in The Stones in Exile, the band's 2010 documentary about the making of their classic album, Exile on Main Street.

Over the past decade, he has also conducted numerous multi-hour filmed interviews for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Oral History project. Among the artists Dr. Bowman has interviewed extensively over the past fifty years are Bob Marley, Robbie Robertson, The Rolling Stones, Lou Reed, Frank Zappa, members of Funkadelic, Bobby Blue Bland, Pink Floyd, Buddy Guy, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, T-Bone Walker, B.B.King, Rev. Robert Wilkins, Al Green, Santana, Mavis Staples, Booker T. and the MG's, Jerry Garcia, Grace Slick, Smokey Robinson and Jackie Shane.

Jackie Shane, the pioneering transgender soul singer, was the subject of his sixth Grammy nomination and, in 2024, a second Peabody Award, for the Crave documentary Jackie Shane: Any Other Way.

A dynamic lecturer, Dr. Bowman started teaching at York University at age 23 where he pioneered the study of popular music at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. A musician and born performer, he is a highly sought-after speaker on a range of music genres including jazz, rock, blues, gospel, soul, funk, country and reggae.

He has written part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony program for the past 27 years, typically penning essays for blues, soul and funk inductees ranging from Buddy Guy to the Staple Singers to Isaac Hayes to Prince.

On top of his popular press and liner note work, Dr. Bowman played a seminal role in the founding and creation of The Stax Museum of American Soul Music (opened in Memphis in 2003); wrote the four-part television documentary series The Industry: How Stars are Created in Country Music; has co-produced, conducted interviews and research for numerous music documentaries, and has helped pioneer the study and teaching of popular music in the world of academia.

In recent years, Dr. Bowman has worked on box sets for Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Jackie Shane, the Band, synth pioneer John Mills-Cockell, and Rush. In 2019, he co-wrote The Flyer Vault: 150 Years of Toronto Concert History 1850-2000. In 2021, he published The Last Soul Company: The Story of Malaco Records. In February 2020, he was honored with the Keeping the Blues Alive Lifetime Achievement Award by the Blues Foundation.

Dr. Bowman continues to lecture widely, remains a voting member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and just wrote this year's induction essay honouring Fela Kuti. His latest book, Land of a Thousand Sessions: The Complete Muscle Shoals Story 1951-1985, launched in 2025 to great acclaim.
